NBR vs FKM vs Silicone: Seal Material Comparison

Sanzhu Engineering Team · Sealing Knowledge

These three elastomers cover the majority of O-ring and gasket RFQs we see. Here is how they compare, honestly — including where each one fails.

When to pick NBR

Hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems and general industrial sealing. Best cost-to-performance ratio in the industry — the default choice unless conditions rule it out.

When to pick FKM

High heat, aggressive chemicals, automotive engine bays. Costs 3–5× NBR, but nothing else survives where FKM is genuinely needed.

When to pick silicone

Food contact, medical, or extreme temperature swings. Note the weak tear strength — never use silicone in dynamic or high-abrasion service.
